Bellevue Location needs a lot of fine tuning
New to Lincoln Square in Bellevue, Paddy Coyne's needs a lesson in the expectations of the Eastside set.
My husband and I walked into into the somewhat busy new Paddy's location giddy with anticipation. Immediately we were puzzled...is this it? The location is the size of a small Starbucks, yet all the tables are large four tops, making it awkward for a couple to come in for drinks without feeling like they're taking up more than their fair share of real estate.
We eyeballed an open table and waited for the busser to finish cleaning up; as we began to sit, a server pointed out another table that a party was beginning to vacate, and said we should sit there instead, so we got to get up and wait for the customers to leave, wait for the table to be cleared, and wait while she took five minutes to wipe it down (she was very friendly and genuine, but I don't think she's ever waited tables before).
Okay, no biggie. Time to order our drinks...but there are no menus...okay, there are little black folders on each table that look suspiciously like menus, but they are filled with random promotional pages, and sadly missing a list of beers on tap, specialty drinks, etc. When the server returns she stumbles through a list of mostly unfamiliar beers, and brings us food menus.
As we drink our drinks, we find the need to relieve ourselves. The entire restaurant has one unisex single toilet bathroom. After waiting 10 minutes to use the restroom, I find that either someone else peed all over the bathroom, or they are having some sort of plumbing problem. There are no paper towel dispensers, and whatever paper towels they had stacked nearby had been tossed all over the "puddle" that takes up half the bathroom floor.
When I come back to the table, our waitress takes our order for last call; she's going to put in the order and go upstairs to the bathroom. By the time she returns around 1:35am, the bartender has decided he will not honor the order, and she has to deliver the news to us. It wasn't her fault, but it certainly should have been handled better by the bartender.
As a former Capitol Hill resident, I can honestly say that at one time dirty tables, grotesque bathrooms, and bad service were something I had accepted as the norm after being beaten into submission by the apathetic hipster servers everywhere I went. Now that I've lived on the Eastside for four years, my expectations have changed. Paddy Coyne's would be well served by visiting their competition in the building, Lucky Strike and The Parlor, and noting that those shops have set expectations for Eastside bar-hopping. The old Seattle drill of "you're lucky we're serving you" isn't gonna hold up in Bellevue, especially with much more gracious, clean, and accomodating businesses waiting to take our money two floors up.
